The German TV-Platform is a non-profit association for the promotion and development of digital media business. It unites public service and private broadcasters, network operators and device manufacturers, universities and research institutes, federal ministries, governments and media authorities of the German Länder, as well as other institutions and enterprises engaged in the digital television sector. With, its trans-sectoral and interdisciplinary composition . The German TV-Platform is the only industry funded institution in Germany which brings together members from all fields of the media industry.
The main goals of the The German TV-Platform are the introduction, promotion and development of digital television in Germany. In order to achieve these goals the the German TV-Platform aims
• to promote the exchange of ideas and insights, to foster debates between different social groups and involved market participants and to co-ordinate their diverse interests,
as well as
• to inform the public about new technological and technical developments, different forms of programmes and new contents and applications.
Due to the rapid development of digital electronic media, the aims and activities of the German TV-Platform have changed and broadened several times since its foundation in 1990. Today, the German TV-Platform is mainly engaged with the process of digitisation and convergence between entertainment electronics, information technology and telecommunication, including mobile communication.
New solutions for tomorrow’s television as well as future multimedia services, data broadcasting applications and online applications are discussed in specific Working Groups. The cumulated expertise which results from the interdisciplinary composition of these Working Groups is an important and valuable outcome of the German TV-Platform. New solutions and business scenarios are discussed and developed through constructive co-operation. These serve as a basis for future technical, economic and political decisions of the concerned national bodies and institutions.
