LTE800-DTT Filter report

Deutsche TV-Plattform published at IFA 2011 in September 2011 the second follow-up report about compatibility of broadcasting and mobile telephony in the UHF frequency band. Now the report is also available in English.

The new report focuses on research into so-called LTE800-blocking filters and the possibility, to solve interferences of reception of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) by mobile LTE-networks and -devices in adjacent frequencies by appropriate filters. Following the compatibility reports 2009 and 2010 about LTE/DTT the new document analyses several filtering solutions and the expected improvements in common usage of the UHF frequency band by broadcast and mobile telephony. The irrational expectations of non-existent "miracle filter" is confronted with the technical reality.

Conclusion of the new report: Only through filter systems the interference problem of the so called digital dividend could not be solved! Neither for integrated TVs, nor for set top boxes. And certainly not for portable and mobile receivers. Especially the built-in DTT-receiver-systems in vehicles with active glass integrated antennas are effected by LTE.

The saga that new more robust DTT-devices will be ´by itself´ protected against interferences belongs to the category of wishful thinking", says Dr. Helmut Stein, head of the Working Group Terrestrial and a board member of Deutsche TV-Plattform. The report describes in some chapters: the initial situation, problems regarding DVB-T (DTT), the implementation of filter technology (physicaly "ideal filters", limitations with real filters) and solution approaches, gives an outlook summary and draw conclusions.

With the LTE800 filter report in German and English Deutsche TV-Plattform continues its contribution to the international debate about LTE and DTT and gives so impetus for discussions among experts across national borders too. The goal is, to render the discussion between the market participants much more objective and to indetify methods to find improvement of the situation by means of partnership on equal terms. That is necessary in view of the new World Radio Conference (WRC 2012), witch in far-reaching decisions proposed, that after the 800 MHz spectrum also the 700 MHz spectrum could be open from 2015 on for equal use by brodcast and mobile telephony.
