Switching from analogue to digital terrestrial TV broadcasting was completed in Germany at the end of 2008. The last analogue base network transmitter has been switched off and antenna has become the first of the three classical ways of TV reception where the digitisation has been completed. Two years ahead of the schedule, viewers may now enjoy a much larger variety of programmes via DVB-T than they did during the time of analogue terrestrial transmission. In the field of Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T), Germany is now in the top group of the European countries that have relinquished analogue terrestrial television.
High penetration rate
The DVB-T penetration rate in Germany is over 90 per cent. More than 74 million people can receive the „ÜberallFernsehen“ [Ubiquitous TV] over rooftop and outdoor antennas or over one of the 24 million indoor aerials. Approximately 30 per cent of the German residents are able to receive broadcasting over an indoor antenna or with portable or mobile devices. Individual reception conditions can be checked at www.ueberallfernsehen.de. Using an interactive tool, different available means of reception are displayed in form of a colour-coded map. Thus, a prognosis can be made concerning the kind of antenna that is needed for reception in the single regions of Germany.
Large diversity of devices and antennas
The number of DVB-T receivers sold exceeds 17 million according to the German Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs- und Kommunikationselektronik (gfu) [Association for the Promotion of Consumer and Communication Electronics]. Almost all flat screens are equipped with DVB-T as a standard. Thus, no additional receiver is needed. Enroute use can be achieved by portable end user devices as well as by USB TV sticks for PCs and laptops. DVB-T capable mobile telephones, GPS devices and fixtures in vehicles are also available now.
Certificates of Quality defines minimum requirements
The DVB-T-Gütesiegel [DVB-T Certificate of Quality] for receivers and for antennas guides both consumers and retailers. The Certificate of Quality can be recognised by the green DVB-T-Logo. It stands for the compliance with minimum requirements for a smooth reception which were worked out by the experts of the Working Group DVB-T. The German TV-Platform allocates the certificate to manufacturers of sets and antennae on basis of self obligation for the nationwide use of the DVB T-logo on the respective product. The overview of the minimum requirements for antennas and receivers and the application form for the DVB-T Certificate of Quality are displayed and can be downloaded in the box on top of this page.
