The German TV Platform celebrates its 35th anniversary. On November 2, 1990, 19 decision-makers met at the airport in Frankfurt am Main and founded the “National HDTV Platform Germany”. The registered association now operates as the “German TV Platform” and has been a reliable and effective organization alongside the entire TV industry in Germany for 35 years \u2013 from program providers to network operators to TV device manufacturers.<\/p>\n

The German TV Platform has significantly shaped the technical development of television in Germany for 35 years. The focus is on the fields of media convergence and transformation, with current emphases on Artificial Intelligence, AdTech, Car Entertainment, and DVB-I. Technical requirements due to regulatory frameworks, such as the Accessibility Act, are gaining importance. Currently, the members of the German TV Platform are actively accompanying the change in the TV landscape within the framework of three working groups “Media over IP”, “Smart Media” and “Ultra HD”.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n \n

The German TV Platform is an association of over 50 companies and organizations, including private and public broadcasters, streaming providers, device manufacturers, internet companies, infrastructure operators, service and technology providers, research institutes and universities, federal and state authorities as well as other companies, associations, and institutions involved with digital media. The aim of the registered association since its founding in 1990 is the introduction of digital technologies based on open standards.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n \n

Milestones in the History of the German TV Platform<\/p>

The representatives of TV broadcasters, TV manufacturers, the IT industry, state-run companies, ministries, and associations initially and primarily focused on one thing after the association’s founding: Coordinating and supporting the market introduction of HDTV \u2013 according to the analog 1250\/50 standard developed within the European research project Eureka 95 \u2013 on a broad scale. The first working groups were already established in 1991.<\/p>\n

Soon after the founding of the “HDTV Platform”, voices increased that the step to HDTV is only sensible if television generally first switches from analog to digital transmission. Therefore, in 1993, the name was changed to “German Platform for HDTV and New Television Systems”, and the association’s work henceforth concentrated on the digitization of television to establish innovations on a digital basis in the TV market through collaborative interaction.<\/p>\n

In the further course, the TV Platform developed strategies, published numerous impulse papers, and regularly organized events and symposia. It moderated scenarios for technological leaps, such as the transition from analog to digital television on all distribution channels. From PALplus to DVB-T, HDTV, and DVB-T2 HD to Ultra HD-HDR and HbbTV, the German TV Platform has not only accompanied all associated processes and developments for 35 years but has also intensively supported and advanced them in many respects.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n
