The German TV Platform warns against the effects of the recent auction of radio frequencies by the Federal Network Agency to mobile operators. The interferences detected during testing require immediate action to solve this problem as well as an assurance of how the auction revenue is to be used for compensation of costs among those affected.
The ongoing frequencies auction, the largest in Germany by the Federal Network Agency, aims to provide around 1.35 million rural households with a fast Internet access through broadband mobile services, thus closing the gap in the modern information society. When the "silver bullet" Long Term Evolution (LTE) comes into action, 24 million TV households could be affected by the interference in the image and sound, paying for the digital dividend with restrictions on television reception, warns the German TV Platform. In particular, this applies to the frequency spectrum from 790 to 862 MHz, i.e. the UHF channels 61 to 69, used so far in broadcasting.
