Ultra HD

Where image quality is redefined.

4K streaming, HDR, immersive audio: Technological possibilities have multiplied, along with the question of how reliably they reach the viewer.

The AG Ultra HD ensures that technological innovation does not fragment into isolated solutions, but makes products and services practical.

Head of the Working Group

Stefan Kunz, as Vice President Broadcast Services at Sky Deutschland, manages the entire technical value chain from the signal creation of Sky programs to distribution via satellite, cable, IPTV, and OTT. In the DTVP, he leads the AG Ultra HD and is a member of the board. Under his leadership, Sky has positioned itself as a pioneer for UHD live sports in Germany — an experience he brings to the demanding work of the DTVP.

“Ultra HD is no longer a niche topic. But for image quality to truly reach the viewer, production, distribution, and end devices must work perfectly together. That’s exactly what we are working on in the AG.”

FROM THE AG

Task Force and Plugfest Series.

Concrete formats emerge from the AG Ultra HD: a Task Force focused on sustainability and the annual Plugfest series in Berlin as a central forum for interoperability tests. Both formats make visible what the AG achieves operationally.

Task Force

Sustainability

“We are working on a unified assessment of sustainability for different distribution channels.”

The EU-wide Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and increasing transparency requirements have increased the pressure on all market participants. However, a unified assessment of emissions from audiovisual distribution is still lacking — neither for broadcast nor for broadband.

The Task Force is developing a comparable methodology. The first phase focuses on the distinction between content production and distribution. In the further course, existing studies and measurement methods will be compared to create a unified assessment for TV signal distribution, GreenStreaming, and OTT.

Plugfest & HbbTV Test Event

“Friendly atmosphere, excellent infrastructure, good collaboration across all companies.”

Participant feedback from the Plugfest

For over ten years, the DTVP has offered the Plugfest as a central forum for interoperability tests. Over 30 companies from Europe, Asia, and the USA recently tested in around 200 sessions on HbbTV, streaming, DVB-I, immersive audio, as well as UHD-HDR and HDMI.
The format is conducted in cooperation with the Digital Television Group (DTG), the HbbTV Association, and Fraunhofer FOKUS. The results flow directly into the product development of the participants. The Plugfest is a pure working format: testing is done on what would otherwise go wrong in reality.
The DTVP Plugfest is part of an annual Plugfest series: in spring organized by the DTG (UK), in summer by Kineton (IT), and traditionally in autumn by the DTVP.
